humans & 'nature'
III - breaks/kintsugi
This is the final chapter in the Humans & Nature inquiry, and deals with destruction and reconstruction.
Mountain stones and rocks carry the signs of millennia-old upheavals and of the clash of tectonic plates. We did not witness those dramatic changes. Now, because of global warming and our own impact even on glaciers, we realize how violent and sudden they can be.
I chose to represent those breaks through traditional printing practices. Solar plates, etched with the data from digital images, become the bases for the final prints.
Can we repair those wounds? The Japanese practice of kintsugi offers a tool and a message: heal, but don't hide what happened. In kintsugi I will use fragments of rocks to express the materiality of reconstruction.
2018-23, cm. 30x30
3 + 1AP
The digital images have been etched on solar plates and printed with traditional methods on Hanhemühle 300 gsm cotton paper. In the "kintsugi" version, fragments of rocks will be added to the photo etchings, making each set of prints unique.
Note. Spider web? Break, Gate to Hades, Separation and Target Practice were created in the context of the project Intrusions, carried out with Mariana Smith and Uli Altmüller at the Art Print Residence in Arenys de Munt, Cataluña in 2023.
