Amore
Amore.
intricacy
I follow each stitch of fine openwork the needle gathers a few bars loops around them pulls them down gently loops around them again and pulls them down five times? ten times? then moves on to the next clump of warp and repeats and repeats I lose track my eyes wander from bar to bar from stitch to stitch midway through the white linen a high relief in full point breaks the pattern two initials Whose is this bedsheet? I drown in the forest of white stitches they suddenly grow into tall trees I wander from tree to tree admiring the pine needles the nervatures of ash tree leaves recording with dismay the initiails carved by a cruel hand on the bark of a fir tree Whose are these trees? We know that the bedsheet belonged to a woman a part of her dowry a part of herself as she moved from her father’s home to her husband’s home the sheet told everyone who she had been every morning every evening it reminded her husband it reminded herself of who she was a beautiful ornament to another’s life to another’s name her new name carved in her flesh her new self carved in her flesh Whose is this woman? The poet
A silent witness to words which make their way through hedges of thorny brambles and dust particles of infinity Between thorn and thorn particle and particle resides the poet like an ancient statue in a long-neglected garden her head tilted slightly downward her cheekbones enhanced by moss her lips ajar – just so that the spirit can escape A word still unuttered congeals on the lower lip awaiting the soft touch of the upper lip The poet still silent waits for the statue to awake the marble to become flesh the spirit to take form this form only this one at this moment this word A word the poet never even dreamed Milano, 10 April 2022 |
Gardens
of wilted flowers shriveled crops between sheets of paper under the heavy weight of learning (what else are tomes good for?) resting on a book holder I cannot turn the pages I cannot read you You Fragile traces of blossoming emotions of live intrusions Once strong laughter weightful seating Moon screening opacity Who can tell what color? The shadow of our bodies How could we know then? We could become so fragile Resting on a book holder Ann Arbor, 18 November 2021 |
Little boy
eyes wide open onto your self onto us So present as only kinds can be So absent as old people can become You remind me of my own presence You give me a glimpse of my absence We play hide & seek under a flaming red blanket You are there and you are not Present and absent When I embrace you Your giggle is a trill You voice your own name Fully present, for once Milano, 5 February 2022 |
Shape
Trying to find a shape for what is or has been I thought I knew it I had it almost in my grasp smooth welcoming so soothingly dark Like this lying in bed hands folded in my lap the gesture of pregnant women and elderly ladies Am I holding that shape? insubstantial invisible unassuming Cradled in my hands which do not touch anything do not sense anything A barren womb Ann Arbor, 8-9 November 2021 |

The Lark Ascending
Last night (toward morning) tears swelled up from a me bent over more and more crushed by the lightest of substances salty water bent over my arms folded on a table an attempt, at first, at shielding myself from sight crushed in the dream My sleeping self lies on the bed my arms at its side dry eyes dreams of a deeper self seated at a table arms crossed head resting in their crook yielding to the tears crying desperately for Michael ______ A young human creature rises from the bottom of the sea in a small submarine bubble a column rising toward the light All I see from the bottom up is the head of this young one protected by a bright orange hard hat A marvel in the dream ____ I wake up in profound sorrow My eyes are dry Ann Arbor, 11 June 2021 |
Emotions
Emotions? Passions? too wrenching unfathomable in the flesh from the flesh Gestures What words? What gestures? The soul chafes prisoner of an impalpable unmeasurable invisible membrane The body an armor a mighty stone a tower a dark seemingly bottomless dungeon Howls climb the moisten, mossy walls They climb and climb They fizzle depleted by the ascent Whispers Sighs pockmark the membrane from within gentle ondulations under the skin Evanescent aftershocks of an earthquake are all that has been left to see Ann Arbor, 3 April 2020 |

On the walls of the cave Our ancestors lost in speech-less thought snaking like the tail of a bull whispering like a neighing horse imploring like the imprint of a hand confusing like a female/beast (or is it the other way around?) menacing like the fire menacing like the dark On the walls of my cave I lost in speech-less thought snaking like my contorted soul whispering like my contorted soul imploring like my contorted soul confusing like my contorted soul menacing like my contorted soul menacing like my contorted soul Ann Arbor, 21 February 2020 |

The dream
She let herself go in the dream in the opaque image in the morning fog in the seagulls’ flight in the big sail that covered the sea gently the silence conquered us whispered music shadowed the lifeless garden enlivened by unwelcome thoughts flowers turned wild ruins of musky statues branches shaken by a soundless wind far away unreachable in the dream |
Poems in the night
The poems appear as angels in the night announcing the ineffable to us for us of ourselves what would we be without mystery? but rocks battered by a ferocious sea specks of dust tossed about by capricious winds The angels spread their wings luminous against the velvet sky The angels spread the new word through the quiet night “Poet, this is our gift to you Listen to the unheard the unspoken You will hear the inaudible You will give voice” ____________ The poems appear as angels in the night Ann Arbor, 17 April 2013 |

Wreckage
His mind teetered on the abyss of recollection then snapped back to the safe land of amnesia ______ like the sensation of almost falling or slipping away gray matter falling inside the skull This dull, sparkless gray matter perculates through the crevaces between him and him-self gray matter doomed to erupt, perhaps, as may do a volcano long dormant long forgotten dressed in black lava and green vines fertile on its ancient rounded slopes Red is the color of death sparkling in the night and of new life after the pyroclastic explosions the plumes of smoke the rains of ash and pomice Many centuries later Ann Arbor, 23 June 2012 / Torino, 30 luglio 2012 |
Naufragio
Rite of spring
On the verge of a winterless spring an owl is hooting in the caves where our ancestors still speechless sing the praises of our brethren Horses dance through the tall grasses – eye by eye ear by ear Lions reign unchallenged Half humans half animals mate on a stalactite Thirty millennia ago A young creature rolls joyously in the carpet of thick moss she pounces at fleeting shadows of restless leaves then starts head tilted toward unheard sounds She wonders Newcomers stump through the underbrush crush branches illuminate labyrinthine depths cast their long shadows brand tuff walls with red and black Don't you wonder at them the immortals? They, the immortals and we, a species on the verge of extinction? Ann Arbor, 15/18 February, 2 March 2012 In flight, NY – DTW, 20 March 2012 |

two churches
The two churches talk from afar brick wall to dark wood pink rustication to Baroque molding gold You hear them in the squeak of a kneeling stool that welcomes a worshipper head bent over forearms taut over hands joined abandoned, slack, beyond the pew’s edge in the shuffling of the faithful as they disperse [among the benches scattering like maple seeds, they come to rest where the wind drops them They greet you, two faces, austere, two mysteries from the hieratic icon a mother and child disconsolate woman from a land not hers Does her mystery bring you consolation? from the lightrose darkrose of the high relief the Savior a son a man of the North, with his long limbs long hair [long bearded face sacrificed? so you yield to the temptation of reaching out your hand toward a stranger caress his wounds dry his tears The light wanders among the rounded columns fades in the coves of the confessionals spreads, impartial, from the skylights illuminates the great serene space toys with the candle flame that you just lighted wavering |
