humans & 'nature'
II - metamorphosis In the second part, Humans & Nature looks at Metamorphosis, the biological process which changes the cellular structure of a creature, giving origin to a completely new one: from caterpillar, to pupa, to butterfly. In ancient history and in literature, metamorphosis describes the transformation of a human being into a natural object, often an animal: Ulysses' mates become swines, Daphne a laurel tree, Delle Vigne a bleeding bush, Gregor Samsa a cockroach. I represent human beings who are appropriated, incorporated, or 'used' by humble natural objects, such as a fern, a field of grasses or a contorted tree. Both humans and natural objects appear unaware of what is happening. We cannot even tell what creature, if any, will emerge from their merging. The process shown here is, therefore, a carrier of ambivalent meanings and of uncertain outcomes.
