water ways
is a title which plays with the multiple meanings of the word "way": a path, a style of doing things, a direction. What substance has more "ways" than water? Flexible and malleable, it finds its path no matter what you try to do to stop it, and yet it maintains its mass and "identity." It symbolizes life, purity, fertility, infinite movement, the passing of time, the transience of things. This collection tries to show a few of water's "ways," and the optical illusions which they create. In Microcosm, mature bur-reed plants leave us wondering whether we are looking at a pond or at the sky, at the microcosm or at the macrocosm. The same plant in its young stage looks like minnows in Primordial Life #1. The rounded shapes of Primordial Soup and Ribbons suggest molted metal more than water, while the frozen drops in Primordial Life #2, the "mountains" in Water? and the ice in Fragments and Hibernation remind us that water is not only the giver of life but also its reaper. But this is the rhythm of water, which is always, no matter what, sor'acqua (sister water), as Saint Francis warmly addressed her.
